what are you finding out from your sources. you know, detectives have just arrived to the scene, nick. in fact, they have also brought a demand van which tells us they're going to be out here for quite a while investigating. we don't have an update on the condition of the homeowner. he is in extreme critical condition. at this point we don't have an update as to how he's doing or whether he's in surgery or not. but what we know from police is that the homeowner about 4:30 this morning was leaving to work. he came outside of his house, and somehow or another got into a confrontation with two suspects. no one knows exactly what the confrontation was over. one of the suspects pulled a gun and shot him point-blank in the chest. we know that there was a woman inside the house that called 911. and that's when police responded out here to the scene. now, we have been talking with neighbors.

the house is a city worker. we don't know whether it's that city worker that was the man that was shot though. they tell us it's a very nice family and this is a nice neighborhood. all of this is coming as quite a surprise. we want to mention something. when we arrived on the scene we noticed there were a couple car doors open. police are investigating whether or not someone was breaking into cars. right now they still don't know that. they are waiting for homeowners to wake up and come out and let them know what exactly took place and if missing from those cars. waiting to confirm whether that may be what led up to this shooting. we're live in southwest phoenix, maryellen resendez, abc15 news. one man is in the hospital after being stabbed multiple times. it happened at this circle k near 16th and roosevelt. witnesses say the victim was asleep in his car when the suspect approached him and out of the blue started attacking. one of the stab wounds was actually to his neck. now, he is expected to be okay. police have not said what led up to this attack.

hispanic man in his 20s wearing light colored clothing. an officer critically wounded after a shooting in atlantic city. according to authorities, one suspect was killed during a shoot out with police overnight, and one officer is in surgery right now. this happened in the parking garage at the casino there, the caesar's, we know there is a search for there's two other suspects. this area still blocked off right now, and as soon as we learn more details about this one, allison, we'll check back in, and of course g the latest. nick, we are also learning of another officer involved shooting. this one in new mexico. sadly, an officer was killed in this one. authorities say two officers were in pursuit of a suspect when he opened fire on them. we're told the officer fired back, striking the victims. he was killed on scene. officer clint corvenas was hit. he was a 4 year veteran with the police department, and leaves behind an 8-year-old

overnight. this one happening at an apartment complex near i-17 and greenway. at least two units damaged by the flames here. it does appear everybody made it out. it's still unclear right now if anybody had to be taken to the hospital. we'll continue to ask questions on that one. let's get to this apartment complex fire near 43rd and thunderbird. we're still working to learn exactly how that one got started and what led up to that one. we have to talk about this one here. this was a house fire sparked and we're told this is a vacant house. nobody was inside at the time. firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading. we're told the kitchen area was damaged but no word yet on what sparked it. a fourth fire sparking early this morning. this home going up in flames south of downtown near 7th 7th avenue and grant. a huge response. dozens of firefighters battling the flames. we're told people living here made it out safely. as soon as we get more info,

we just checked and officials now say all of the ballots have been counted. here are those unofficial results. look at the race for congressional district five in the east valley. could not be any tighter. state senate president andy biggs leading christine jones by nine votes. she was ahead since primary vote. we have seen that lead continue to shrink in recent days, and another tight race for the county hellhell -- helen percel ahead of aaron flannery by 85 votes. homicide detectives, they are investigating a murder after a guy is gunned down in the sunny slope area near 2nd street and alice. we have reached out for information, and we are still wait to go hear back. we're told shots were fired during some kind of fight. we know at least one person is dead. we saw the search going on with

the ground as well. the shooters have not yet been caught. it's an abc15 exclusive now, a valley family demanding answers after their father's accused killer walks out of jail even after admitting to the crime. police say kathy sackrider was speeding and plowed into a car at gilbert and mcchemical lips, pushing -- mckellips. she admitted she was drunk and high, and spent less than 24 hours in jail, and the judge released her the families just want justice. >> are they not worthy, i'm thinking, okay, are they not worthy of a bond. is it that our family members are not important just because he felt sorry for this girl? that's just irresponsible. >> now, sackrider has more than 20 prior arrests in florida, including carjackings, armed robbery and prostitution. a report sent to the judge said

sackrider is supposed to be back in court september 15th. 8:06 in chandler, a man hunt underway for five people after a teenager is scrumptious stabbed and left for dead all -- is jumped, stabbed and left for dead over a bicycle. this morning, police revealing that they are looking for a blue and brown sedan. we're working to try to get an update on the condition of that 16-year-old. so tragic there. a serial arsonist strike investigators in chandler on scene responding to the 6th 6th suspicious fire in a month near mcclintock and chandler boulevard. this is the latest fire sparking last night after a trailer, a car, a backyard fence and a house all went up in flames recently. now, at this point police cannot tell us if these are connected. they are looking for some kind of a pattern. one woman we spoke with has two small kids and she says she's terrified. she says she she wants person

abc15.com/bikes. right now scottsdale tightening its rules on medical marijuana dispensaries. it will affect where they can be, and how many there can be. the city council unanimously approving the changes. the minimum distance between each dispensary doubles to just over 2600 feet. and the distance from schools, homes, and churches and parks now triples to 1500 feet allison. it is trending online and by now, taco trucks on every corner, a comment by a latinos for trump, and this is a sign in central phoenix here, and it says taco trucks on every corner. the sign poking fun of a donald trump supporter who went on tv saying that that's what's going to happen if immigration changes are not made. >> from a political professional standpoint, that's a bad slander to me.

joking way. >> now, democrats say the reaction has been positive there. a few people saw the sign and registered to vote. they're even planning on bringing the taco truck to the location today to draw even more attention. they were targeting mosquitoes but accidentally killed millions and millions of honey bees. now officials in south carolina are apologizing this morning, these honey bees, of course, the world's most important pollinator of an extensive use of herbicides and pesticides. it's going to take delta a while to bounce back from the computer outages, costing them 2300 canceled flights in three days. they are looking at a hundred million dollars in lost revenue. delta not the only one either. southwest airlines losing $53 million from a july outage that resulted in thousands of canceled flights. and taking a trip to santa fe new mexico, that's about to get a whole lot easier just in

american airlines will launch a new service, running once a day in each direction, between santa fe and sky harbor. the flights are not scheduled to start until december. lax projecting for a record number of people traveling on labor day. they expect more than 800,000 passengers this weekend. multiple delays are expected for those traveling to the east coast. today officers are going to be beefing up their controls to direct the bumper to bumper traffic to airport. hop on a plane at lax with a dream and a a cardigan. they're trying every trick in the book. unfortunately, distracted driving seems to be getting worse, and at times police may feel like this is a losing battle. last year alone, sadly here about 3500 people were killed in the u.s. and puerto rico, and that is way up from previous years, and those numbers may be worse. here's the challenge, police

test to know if a driver was using his or her cell phone when they show up to a crash scene. it's tough. every parent wants to make sure their child makes it to and from school safely, right, but one spot in the east valley is taking things a step further. traffic expert mallory moore is telling us how. >> reporter: drivers in queen creek are going to see a whole lot more of these cruising around because mcso district 6 is boosting controls for the next month. drivers see the cruisers they'll slow down and obey the laws of the road, part of the reason they chose to increase in september is because kids are back in school. >> people are forgetting the school zones and we want to remind them you've got kids out there playing and they need to go ahead and slow down, look around, be observant. >> reporter: another reasons drivers need to be more attentive. lots of road projects happening around the southeast valley, chandler heights, ellsworth, all under construction with

works. in queen creek, mallory moore abc15 news. thanks mallory. let's go ahead and talk about our most accurate forecast here. this is a live look outside. you see a few straggling clouds. really it's not that bad. we're going to call things mostly clear this morning. not completely. we have some of those clouds in play as we take a live look outside the mayo clinic valley camera. current temperatures right now across the valley. some of us have dropped into the 70s here. not bad. upper 70s to low 80s this morning. 80 in 82 in gilbert. 77 in ahwatukee. 84 in glendale. 82 in goodyear, and buckeye at 72 degrees. here's a look at how the rest of the day is going to go for us here. by 10:00 a.m., 92 degrees. we'll warm up nicely. by 1:00, flirting with triple digits at 99. by 9:00 p.m., still at 91 degrees. we'll top out at 103 today here in the phoenix area.

this is abc15 news taking action. >> 8:30 on a saturday, so happy to have you with us. i'm nick ciletti. >> and i'm allison rodriguez. it is a holiday weekend. hopefully you're going to be able to enjoy a three day weekend here. let's talk about the forecast so you know what to expect. for today, we have abc15 desert doppler going up right now. we are scanning our skies. we don't have a lot going on in the valley. that's good news. it's a calm start to the day, and under mostly clear to clear skies. as we look on the rest of the day here, from the east to the west valley, we'll be starting out in the 80s which is where a lot of us are right now. by lunchtime here, we're going

there, and then you can see later on we'll be in the low 100s right around 5:00. so i think things are going to be really nice for today. we have to talk about that u of a forecast. that is coming up in just a few minutes. >> we start with breaking news right now. a valley man shot right in front of his own home as he was going to work this morning. abc15's maryellen resendez has been on scene at 35th avenue and southern all morning for maryellen police say the victim was shot after confronting two men nearby. >> we just got an update from phoenix police. they are saying that they are investigating if these two suspects may be tied to some car burglaries in the area. so our victim was actually, nick, coming out of that house that you see right there. we can see some keys that are dropped right in front of that red car right there. we're told he came out possibly upon these two suspects. there was some type of confrontation, although police

confrontation was about, and he was shot in the chest. we were told by police a short time ago that he is still in surgery. right now, there is all hope that he may survive this, and certainly we're hoping that he will survive this. we are being told that he was shot in the chest. he's in extreme critical condition, and as i mentioned, in surgery. again, police still not sure exactly what it was over or whether he came out and possibly confronted those suspects in the middle of car burglary. we do know when we arrived at the scene, we did see a couple of car doors that were open which was unusual. police are confirming that they are investigating whether these suspects may be tied to some car burglaries. they haven't been able to actually tie them just yet. live in southwest phoenix, maryellen resendez, abc15 news. mare ellen -- maryellen, thank you. breaking overnight, a suspected drunk driver in jail

cruiser. now, the good news here, no officers were hurt, but a witness tells us the driver of the truck was asleep in it at the median near baseline and southern when police approached him. he woke up, made a u-turn, hitting a police cruiser and narrowly missing the officer. we are working to find out what that impairment was and to figure out what exactly he may be charged with. an earthquake rattling across 7 stairways, a 5.6 quake felt from missouri, to oklahoma. it's one of the largest quakes on record for the area. oklahoma state officials and engineers right now are checking out bridges and other structures near the epicenter. let's get to some new video of the damage now being reported. you can see some bricks on the ground after falling this from building. this happened in pawnee, oklahoma. the feds are gearing up for a kratom crack down. you can buy it in stores right now. the dea is cracking down on it.

morning, daniel boydtivity pleaded not guilty to attempted moe litigationation -- moe legislationation of a child. -- molestation. he's scheduled to be sentenced next month. a deal reached on attorney general fees in sheriff joe arpaio -- on attorney fees in sh wanted nearly $6 million. whatever the agreement is, county officials will have to put it in for a vote. it's a face you're about to see more often. u.s. marshals say they are ready to end this guy's 16 year run from the law. anthony seth burroughs, has a $25,000 reward to catch him. he's accused of gunning down 19- year-old juan reuben rodriguez

school. officers in newtown arresting a 28-year-old man for calling the school and making some kind of a threat for the first day of classes. police are investigating if this manmade threats against other schools as well. this school opening this year after the old building was demolished following that tragic 2012 shooting spree that killed 26 people including 20 students who were just kids. the water still a no go in flint, michigan, this morning. we're just finding out that enviro have to test that city's water supply for another three months. right now, crews are working on a new pipeline. the city switched from droits water system to the flint river -- detroit's water system to the flint river, and ended up causing lead to go into the new water supply. so many college games going on today, including two big ones here. we've got asu versus nau, plus u of a taking on byu.

nice night to enjoy yourself. as far as labor day weekends go, it's kind of the official, unofficial end to the summer here. 85 degrees right now. your dew point's in the 50s there, and humidity in the 40s. not terrible. i think those dew points are going to go up a little bit throughout the morning and drop down later through the day as we continue to dry out. keep that in mind. your valley current temperatures here right now. some of us in the 70s. like cave creek. also buckeye in the now, but most of us right now coming in the 80s and a few spots like maricopa and ahwatukee, they have dropped into the 70s this morning, so we're now starting to ascend those temperatures right now. laveen, some spots in 91. i'll have to double check that reading. valley wind speeds not bad. light and variable in spots like glendale, but otherwise we're anywhere between 5 to 10 miles per hour there right now. so not terrible. here's a look at the next three days as we have been talking about your labor day weekend.

dry. 103. we get plenty of sunshine tomorrow when our temperatures drop a little bit to 101, and by monday, we are looking for a warm labor day but below average temperatures. we'll top out at 100 degrees on monday, not bad at all. so let's track what's going to be happening here across the state today. future cast shows us by today, later on this morning, 10:00 a.m., to be specific here, we are going to keep chances for showers along the rim there. the valley staying dry from this one here, but keep that in mind if you are heading up north. not a bad idea to do so the might see wet roads up there and that umbrella you'll need it this morning. as we get through the rest of the day, things are clearing up statewide. slight rain chances to the southwest, the whole state is clearing out and drying up. we're expecting to be clear, really nice conditions. seasonal conditions. so that's good news here, and by the time we get to your labor day morning, look at that, nothing, goose egg up there. we're going to be dry and pretty warm but still below average.
